Many systems

There are many CMS providers.

Some are specialised in Content Management Systems for web projects. These systems often organise information as web pages and are therefore less suitable for output into other media and formats. In this case, web Content Management Systems (WCM, WCMS) are also referred to.

Document Management Systems (DMS) are primarily specialised in the organisation of digitised paper documents in electronic files and the administration of file circulation in an organisation. These also are one of the CMS in the original sense.

The term Enterprise Content Management (ECM, ECMS) was developed from the idea of integrating web Content Management and Document Management to create an all-encompassing solution. This soon emerged as marketing hype. The term has stuck and is usually used today for systems with distinct workflow support.

The term CMS has various connotations and what exactly is meant by it is not always clear straight away.
